Ham Holiday Attendance Up 25% – Followup
Seems like everyone in the Amateur Radio World is buzzing about just where the Dayton Hamvention is moving (spoiler alert – Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia). That said, putting some ’round numbers’ on Ham Holiday this year, I’m told attendance was in the neighborhood of 800. Last year’s attendance was a bit shy of 650, so this is a healthy direction for Ham Holiday attendance to be going. It will make it easier to attract other vendors with those kind of numbers, and generally, bigger crowds beget bigger crowds. This is very encouraging.
I was on the CORA board, and briefly President for a while, back in the really big Ham Holiday meeting . We would pack-out Friday night sessions on weather stuff at the old Lincoln Plaza Hotel. In a room that seated 200, we crammed 300 into the room for a weather spotting session by a well-known Research Scientist. My co-chair and I were waiting to get hauled out by the Fire Marshall, but thankfully, no one from that office came to check us out! 😀
In context, Dayton had an official attendance of 25.364 this year. The heyday of Dayton was in the early ’90s when they were recording numbers between 33,000 and 35,000. By comparison, the largest Ham Radio meeting in Europe is each in June of each year at Friedrichshafen. (southern Germany on Lake Constance). For the last couple of years, this event is a double-feature with the Geman “Maker Faire Bodensee”. There are no breakout numbers to differentiate between the two groups, but total attendance for this event was up about 200 from last year to 17.230. So Ham Holiday is in good company.
Looking forward to next year’s event. Hopefully even Bigger and Better!
What The Heck Is DMR?
Main Trading Company did a Land Office business selling DMR radios to SCARS members at Ham Holiday. By my unofficial count, there were 10 DMR-capable radios sold to SCARS members. There will VERY LIKELY be a ‘stay after school’ Q&A on DMR by N5HZR after the scheduled post-business presentation at the August meeting. And there is a DMR-centric page with radio-centric info (and a bonus Baofeng Chirp database) on the SCARS website now – check it out at: http://w5nor.org/codeplugs/
Collector & Emitter
As a reminder for those at the June SCARS meeting and a link for those who were not, here is the direct link to the historical issues of CORA’s almost 30 year long monthly publication, The Collector & Emitter. Lot’s of great stories, True and Fiction, MANY club meeting notes, Happenings in Oklahoma Amateur Radio, and for me at least, a ton of memories about the Amateur Radio Dealers which we had in the OKC area. Lots and lots of fun reading.
When you start reading these, the clock will just melt away…
Weekly “Memories” Nag?
Keep your Memory channels on your mobile or HT sorted so you’ll have easy access to frequencies needed for Skywarn or ARES activation. That list is at the bottom of the SCARS Repeater blog maintained by our trusty Trustee, N5UWY – SCARS Repeater Blog (that underlined part is a hyperlink straight to the repeater blog). Scroll down to the Red Box at the bottom of the blog to find the recommended memory entries for you VHF/UHF equipment.
Did I Forget You Last Week?
There’s an easy way to make sure that you receive each and every blog post. Yes, even on those days when I forget to send an email out to the Club list! But remember that I ONLY send out an email notification for the Weekly Newsletters. The other non-Weekly posts are very rarely notified about via email.
From anywhere on the Blog, scroll down until you see “Follow Blog via Email” in the right side-bar. Sign-up there, and you will always receive an email notice each and every time I post something here. Big Solar Flare? Bingo – you’re on it.
The Doctor Is In
Many of us have enjoyed Joel Hallas’ (W1ZR) columns in QST titled “The Doctor Is In” for years.
Now selected stuff from The Doctor is available via podcast from the ARRL.
The July 28 Podcast is titled “Magnetic Loop Antennas”.
The Doctor’s Home page is here: The Doctor Is In .
However, I recommend that you navigate “to” the Doctor’s homepage link and then use the Blubrry link to get to the podcasts. They seem to be more current than even the ARRL archives.
