Morse Code Demo Request

Steve Gunnels, Science teacher at Irving Middle School, is requesting a Morse Code specialist to explain it to about 80 Eighth graders during 4 separate 50 minute meetings on September 9th.  It doesn’t have to take up the entire 50 minutes.

Mr. Steve Gunnels

6th and 8th Grade Science

Irving Middle School

*IF* you want to tackle this, let me know at WB5ULK@ARRL.NET. I have his email address. If more than one of you respond, it would be great to “Tag Team” this demo back and forth across the room!

The August Handout

N5HZR had a two-sided handout for everyone at the August meeting. Here it is…

ARES

Training – Nets going well, at about 40 check-ins per week, with 6 – 8 listening online.  We’ll be adding more training opportunities in each net.

Net Control Operator Training August 20th in Tulsa
Date: Saturday, Aug 20
Time: 0900 – 1200
Place: Cisco, 7633 East 63rd pl, Suite 110
Cost: no financial cost.  It’s only your time and on-going commitment to serve our community.
Talk in frequency: 147.390
The Point of Contact for the NCO training is:
Paul H. Teel, WB5ANX
Tulsa County Emergency Coordinator
918-461-4137 (office)
918-640-6000 (cell)
WB5ANX@arrl.net
However, hold your horses, we’re working with Paul to bring this training to the OKC/Norman area…

Bike MS –  Mark Kleine N5HZR has meeting with them Monday, and will have more info on the Tuesday night net. http://w5nor.org/ will have details. We probably need 7 operators per day: 4 in SAG wagons, and 2-3 at HQ as communicators.

CORA

Tickets sales increased +25% from 2015. 546 to 676. Actual attendance was over 700 with kids, and guests. Thanks for the efforts.

Mark Kleine N5HZR is new CORA President for 2017. Thomas Webb is VP, Leah Ohse is Treas, Dick Rouse is Sec.

SCARS needs a new CORA rep to replace Mark.

Mark would like SCARS to consider managing the Flea Market tables – any takers?

Training

Jamboree On The Air (JOTA)October 15, 2016. Details to follow. Expect SCARS to provide station ops and badge training. We may need another instructor, as last year the class size was a bit large.

February 7, 2017 is the start of the next Technician / General Class. Same as last year, 8 weeks of training, with 1 off week for spring break, and then the test on the first week in April.

Mark Kleine N5HZR has built a Correct Radio Amateur Answer Manual (CRAAM) for the Technician / General / Extra tests. The idea is to use your short term memory to pass the appropriate tests. The test pools have been edited to only contain the question, and the correct answer. Spend 6 hours on the day of the test to read only the question, and the correct answer. W6NBC has done this (without modifying the readings) for 30+ years, and reports an 85% pass rate. Mark is looking for a couple people that want to test this format.

An online Morse Code training program has been developed, and is being tested right now. This will be unveiled later in the year, and the November 2017 meeting will be dedicated to Morse Code. Jerry, Kim, and Bill will lead that group.

Red Cross
James Tittle, the American Red Cross Regional Disaster Director for Oklahoma and Arkansas and I have visited about the possibility to rework the ARC’s radio station at 1205 Halley Dr. This would give the ARC a functional station, with operators to manage any disaster, and it would give SCARS an operating base to teach, instruct, and encourage HF radio operation. More on this activity as it progresses. If you’d like to be part of the rebuild team, please contact Mark.

250′ Tower in Asher, OK
A friend has purchased an AT&T Longlines tower in Asher, OK. He would appreciate a ‘forensic crew’ to inform him of what’s in that facility. If you’d like to be a part of that trip, or rent space on that tower, please contact Mark.

8.4 Ah LiFePO4 Battery

Andrew, VK1AD, writes a Blog about his Summits On The Air activity in Australia (although he activated a number of summits in Ireland Europe on his “Summer” vacation this year). I follow his blog and in this post he talks about something which is getting a LOT of buzz in the Amateur Go Kit community – Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. All the power of Lithium but without the Big Negatives. The are also known as “LFP” – Lithium FerroPhosphate.

If you are the least bit interested, go see how Andrew uses these with his SOTA radio:

Collector & Emitter

Here is the direct link to the historical issues of CORA’s almost 30 year long, monthly publication, The Collector & Emitter. Lot’s of great stories, True and Fiction, MANY club meeting notes, Happenings in Oklahoma Amateur Radio, and for me at least, a ton of memories about the Amateur Radio Dealers which we had in the OKC area. Lots and lots of fun reading.

When you start reading these, the clock will just melt away…

 Weekly “Memories” Nag?

Keep your Memory channels on your mobile or HT sorted so you’ll have easy access to frequencies needed for Skywarn or ARES activation. That list is at the bottom of the SCARS Repeater blog maintained by our trusty Trustee, N5UWY – SCARS Repeater Blog (that underlined part is a hyperlink straight to the repeater blog). Scroll down to the Red Box at the bottom of the blog to find the recommended memory entries for you VHF/UHF equipment.

Did I Forget You Last Week?

There’s an easy way to make sure that you receive each and every blog post. Yes, even on those days when I forget to send an email out to the Club list! But remember that I ONLY send out an email notification for the Weekly Newsletters. The other non-Weekly posts are very rarely notified about via email.

From anywhere on the Blog, scroll down until you see “Follow Blog via Email” in the right side-bar. Sign-up there, and you will always receive an email notice each and every time I post something here. Big Solar Flare? Bingo – you’re on it.

The Doctor Is In

Many of us have enjoyed Joel Hallas’ (W1ZR) columns in QST titled “The Doctor Is In” for years.
Now selected stuff from The Doctor is available via podcast from the ARRL.
The August 25th Podcast is titled “Software Defined Radio“.
[Listen to it here-> Software Defined Radio ]

The Doctor’s Home page is here: The Doctor Is In .

Note: The ARRL DX Bulletins are VERY labor intensive to format for use here, so I’m just going to link to them from here on.
However, you do NOT have to be an ARRL member to read these.
(But I’d like the opportunity to talk with you about joining the ARRL!!!)
