SCARS Member To Operate Maritime Mobile

Randal Walker, W1OWX, will be operating Maritime Mobile during his “off” hours while he is onboard an offshore platform during several weeks in December and January. See his info and QSL card below:

OK! Well it’s been in the planning for a long time and it’s finally coming. Next month, I will be back on the ship with Transceiver and Buddipole. I will be transmitting on 20 and 40 meters depending on if those bands open up and possibly even 6 meters some. I will be on the ship starting December 13 and for 21 days I am going to do my best to snag as many contacts as possible. I have designed a very special commemorative QSL card that I will physically mail out to all confirmed contacts. As it comes close to time, I will post frequencies.

So that Randal does not get SPAMmed, if you’d like to contact him, Randal’s contact info is up-to-date at QRZ.com. As he updates frequencies, I’ll update “this post” as well as the SCARS Facebook Group page.

Good DX, Randal!

International Phonetic Alphabet

There are a bunch of new folks on the air in the Norman area and we’ve talked a bit about this on the Facebook page, but here it is for reference. The ITU Phonetic Alphabet.
I know! I know! Public Safety does their own thing, and it’s cute to phonetically do your call as “Wooley Booger Five Ugly Little Kid” or “Killer Dog Five Wild Animal”, but at the end of the day, not everyone that you run into on the radio is a native English speaker, or not even a ‘gud inglish speeker’. So at the end of the day, if we all stick to ONE Phonetic Alphabet, we just have to enunciate, and then we’re good to go.

Antenna Parties!

There were a couple of antenna parties this week. Here are some pictures from the QTH of David – KG5NYX, Loren – WA5CBF, and an antenna build by Phil – N0ATC.

First, David’s tower-raising!

Here is Loren’s KK4IO Hex Beam during final assembly (other photos disappeared from the FB Group page before I got around to doing the article):

And here is Phil’s homebrew 2m vertical installed in his attic to keep the HOA gremlins happy! He had a great signal into the repeater for the ARES Net on Tuesday night!

 Collector & Emitter

Here is the direct link to the historical issues of CORA’s almost 30 year long, monthly publication, The Collector & Emitter. Lot’s of great stories, True and Fiction, MANY club meeting notes, Happenings in Oklahoma Amateur Radio, and for me at least, a ton of memories about the Amateur Radio Dealers which we had in the OKC area. Lots and lots of fun reading.

When you start reading these, the clock will just melt away…

 Weekly “Memories” Nag?

Keep your Memory channels on your mobile or HT sorted so you’ll have easy access to frequencies needed for Skywarn or ARES activation. That list is at the bottom of the SCARS Repeater blog maintained by our trusty Trustee, N5UWY – SCARS Repeater Blog (that underlined part is a hyperlink straight to the repeater blog). Scroll down to the Red Box at the bottom of the blog to find the recommended memory entries for you VHF/UHF equipment.

The Doctor Is In

Many of us have enjoyed Joel Hallas’ (W1ZR) columns in QST titled
“The Doctor Is In” for years.

Now selected stuff from The Doctor is available via podcast from the ARRL.
The Latest Podcast is titled
Yagi
 Antennas“.

We’re on the downhill slide to the solar minimum, but that doesn’t mean the end of Amateur Radio enjoyment. Even at the very bottom of the cycle there is still plenty to do, and plenty of ways to do it!
