Ground Hog Day Special Event

The Punxsutawney Area Amateur Radio Club is hosting their annual Ground Hog Day Special Event station on Saturday, February 4 (that’s tomorrow!).

Everything you need to know about this event can be found here:

Echolink YL Net

Echolink YL Net at 7:00PM on Thursday – YL Ham Net – Echolink ALARA Conference Node 286905.

Every Thursday evening at 20:00 (8pm) Eastern (0000 UTC Summer and 0100 UTC Winter). Please connect to the net on Echolink through the ALARA Conference Server, Node 286905. Net Control is Catherine AC4YL or Melanie AG4YL.

Share links, pictures, and smileys at the “big” chatroom Do Drop In . Thank you to the North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL) located in Alpharetta, GA for allowing us to use the chat room and for linking your repeaters so others can enjoy the net.

We invite all YLs from around the world to join in, so please tell your YL friends and club members to join us each and every Thursday!

OMs are always welcome to listen, but we kindly ask that only YLs check into the net.

D-Star Forum @ Ham Holiday 2016 – video

This is a video of Dave Downing, WD5G, at last Summer’s HamHoliday, and was recorded by KC5HWB, Jason, for his Youtube Video Series “Ham Radio 2.0”, and is Episode 53. I’ve subscribed to Jason’s Youtube channel so I get emails whenever he posts a new video. There is a wide variety of “stuff” that is presented on his episodes, but this one by WD5G at HH2016 was a VERY good D-Star intro.

Mid-Del Extra “Class”
SCARS Tech/General “Class”

MANY of you have been asking since our very successful Tech/General class last Spring “when are you going to do an Extra Class?”

Well, “we” aren’t. We are going to do another Tech/General class, but the Mid-Del Club will be doing an Extra “Class” starting really soon. Here are the particulars:

Mid-Del ARC Extra Class
Monday nights from 6:30-8:30
8201 E Reno Ave (Training room)
Midwest City
Starts: February 13th
Ends: April 3rd
Testing Session: April 10th
Contact: Donald Ohse (W5DRO)
(be certain to contact Donald before. Don’t just show up!)

That said, here are the particulars of the SCARS Tech/General signup:

The next SCARS Technician / General class will be held on Tuesday nights, starting February 7, 2017.
The last class will be held April 4th, 2017, and a Volunteer Exam session will be held April 6th, 2017.
All of these classes will be held at the Norman Firehouse #7 Training Center at 2207 Goddard Ave, Norman, OK 73019.
All classes and exam sessions will begin at 6:30 pm. Classes will run each evening until 9:00 pm.

If you are interested in either of these classes, you can sign-up here:

Oh, and ask me this question next time you see me:

“Why should I be a member of the American Radio Relay League?”

I’d be delighted to talk with you about it. You should browse around to see what “The League” does for YOUR hobby.

 Collector & Emitter

Here is the direct link to the historical issues of CORA’s almost 30 year long, monthly publication, The Collector & Emitter. Lot’s of great stories, True and Fiction, MANY club meeting notes, Happenings in Oklahoma Amateur Radio, and for me at least, a ton of memories about the Amateur Radio Dealers which we had in the OKC area. Lots and lots of fun reading.

When you start reading these, the clock will just melt away…

 Weekly “Memories” Nag?

Keep your Memory channels on your mobile or HT sorted so you’ll have easy access to frequencies needed for Skywarn or ARES activation. That list is at the bottom of the SCARS Repeater blog maintained by our trusty Trustee, N5UWY – SCARS Repeater Blog (that underlined part is a hyperlink straight to the repeater blog). Scroll down to the Red Box at the bottom of the blog to find the recommended memory entries for you VHF/UHF equipment.

The Doctor Is In

Many of us have enjoyed Joel Hallas’ (W1ZR) columns in QST titled
“The Doctor Is In” for years.

Now selected stuff from The Doctor is available via podcast from the ARRL.
The Latest Podcast is titled
Meteor Scatter
[Good way to work high latitude stations!!!]

We’re on the downhill slide to the solar minimum,
but that doesn’t mean the end of Amateur Radio enjoyment.
Even at the very bottom of the cycle there is still plenty of activity,
and plenty of ways to do it!
