SCARS Monthly Meeting Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the August SCARS Monthly meeting. Time and place can be found on the recently re-designed website here: http://w5nor.org/meetings/

See you there!
Bring A Chair!

FT8

FT8 is Amateur Radio’s newest digital mode (but I haven’t checked this morning, so YMMV) and is quite the rage. Kay Craigie, N3KN, Immediate Past President of the ARRL, has been working FT8 and has been posting about it on Twitter. See image below:
SCARS members and FB Group members who’ve been active on FT8 include KB0FHF. He, David, did a write-up about FT8 on his website, and you should go take a look at it here: https://www.thetechnicalskeptic.com/blog/2017/8/3/a-new-hf-digital-mode-ft8

And while listening to Oh Six on the way to and fro sometime this week I thought I heard people saying that W5IFN and WA6DKD were talking about how exciting FT8 was. Or perhaps I miss-heard over the blare of semi’s airhorn. Who knows?

Here is the wiki link at FT8: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WSJT_(amateur_radio_software)#FT8
Joe Taylor’s (hisself) write-up about it with specs: http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/Release_Notes_1.8.0.txt
A QRZNOW write-up includes an image of an FT8 waterfall and suggested frequencies here: http://qrznow.com/new-digital-mode-from-k1jt-ft8/
There’s even a Facebook Group for FT8. Search for “FT8 Digital Mode Experimental Group”.
And ARRL’s write-up about it, which includes the software link (WSJT-X beta): http://www.arrl.org/news/new-ft8-mode-included-in-wsjt-x-beta-release

Below is an example waterfall of FT8 on a very busy afternoon…

In any case, if you have the inclination, give it a whirl.  And if you hear Harold or Denny there, tell them “hi” for me! 😉

Siren Test Net – Week 2

The Inaugural Edition of the SCARS Siren Test Net was a success. As I recall, there were 14 check-ins covering 14 of Norman’s 67 Outdoor Warning Sirens (OWS). That means that there are plenty of sirens left to adopt. I will note that at least one person noted that their siren did not sound, and that the Net was not heard. I’ll remind all of you that the Siren Net is NOT on the VHF repeater and that it IS on the UHF repeater. 443.7, 141.3 tone. Those of you using handie-talkies exclusively likely have a better signal into the UHF repeater than the VHF repeater.

The list of sirens and those up for adoption can be found in the write-up about the net on the SCARS siren page here:  http://w5nor.org/siren/

Here’s an image below of the Norman OWS system with locations and numbers (also found at that link above, but LARGER):

The Amateur Amateur

The August 2017 Issue of the Amateur Amateur is a rundown of the lesser-known Amateur Radio Awards. You should at the very least sneak over there to see what it is that you are either a) missing, or b) already are eligible to receive. There are several on KB0H’s list that I’ve “earned” and should claim.  Go check it out:  http://www.the-amateur-amateur.com/

Regional Hamfests

HamEXPO – October 7, Belton, TX (http://tarc.org/hamexpo/)
Texoma Hamarama – October 27, Ardmore (http://texomahamarama.org)
Enid ARC Hamfest – November 4 (http://enidarc.org)

 Collector & Emitter

Here is the direct link to the historical issues of CORA’s almost 30 year long, monthly publication, The Collector & Emitter. Lot’s of great stories, True and Fiction, MANY club meeting notes, Happenings in Oklahoma Amateur Radio, and for me at least, a ton of memories about the Amateur Radio Dealers which we had in the OKC area. Lots and lots of fun reading.

When you start reading these, the clock will just melt away…

 Weekly “Memories” Nag?

Keep your Memory channels on your mobile or HT sorted so you’ll have easy access to frequencies needed for Skywarn or ARES activation. That list is at the bottom of the SCARS Repeater blog maintained by our trusty Trustee, N5UWY – SCARS Repeater Blog (that underlined part is a hyperlink straight to the repeater blog). Scroll down to the Red Box at the bottom of the blog to find the recommended memory entries for you VHF/UHF equipment.
