August SCARS Meeting Aftermath

Once again we had 66 at our Monthly Meeting at Fire Station #7!

It was a great day and we had a wonderful program presented by Bob Barth from Longwave Strategic Communications about a specific line of their products – ACE-HF. Like Flexradio, LSC has developed products for the Military which has direct benefits for the Amateur Community. The version that Bob presented to us last week was a natural outgrowth of their DoD product, which means we get the benefit of their research at a MUCH LOWER COST. I’m pretty certain that Bob sold a package or two after the meeting. It’s a good package that is NOT based on soothsaying and pseudo-science. You can graze what LSC offers at their website:
http://www.longwaveinc.com/

And after The Meeting, there were about 6 side meetings that went on until at least 12:30 (I had to leave at that time, but 3 of these side meetings were still going strong).

A great meeting for a rainy Saturday!

Siren Test Net Needs Observers

The first Net had 14 checkins. That means that there are plenty of sirens left to adopt. The Siren Net is on the UHF repeater. 443.7, 141.3 tone. Those of you using handie-talkies exclusively likely have a better signal into the UHF repeater than the VHF repeater.

The list of sirens and those up for adoption can be found in the write-up about the net on the SCARS siren page here:  http://w5nor.org/siren/

Here’s an image below of the Norman OWS system with locations and numbers (also found at that link above, but LARGER):

Book Recommendation: Your First Amateur Radio HF Station

If you a newly minted Amateur, or looking to put together your first HF station, I recommend this book. Sure, you could ask me, or anyone else in the Club for their recommendation, but you’re going to get what I know, or what They know, not really what you “need” to know. Here are some of the headers for this book:
What kind of antenna should you use?
What radio should you buy?
Do You Need an Amplifier?
What About a Computer?
What Types of Accessories Do You Need?
Electricity – Good and Bad.

You can read more about it here:
http://www.arrl.org/shop/Your-First-Amateur-Radio-HF-Station/

Regular Price: $22.95, ARRL Member Price: $19.95, Kindle Price: $9.99

 Collector & Emitter

Here is the direct link to the historical issues of CORA’s almost 30 year long, monthly publication, The Collector & Emitter. Lot’s of great stories, True and Fiction, MANY club meeting notes, Happenings in Oklahoma Amateur Radio, and for me at least, a ton of memories about the Amateur Radio Dealers which we had in the OKC area. Lots and lots of fun reading.

When you start reading these, the clock will just melt away…
