November Meeting – #BOOM!
Holy Moly what a meeting! 64 in attendance and a fab presentation!
Jim Massara N2EST, yes, THE Jim Massara of “HAMTOONS” fame, knocked it out of the park last Saturday with his QSL presentation. He explained the whole QSL experience – real cards – the good and the bad, Bureaus, Green Stamps, and the Pterodactyl of the Amateur Radio QSL business, the IRC. Pictures, stories, and yes even cartoons, he kept us all attentive.
Rather than BORE you with words, how about I link to Michelle’s (W5MQC) Youtube of Jim’s presentation?
Phil Sinnett KD5UGO and Bill Lockett AE5F had a large group who hung around outside in the cold and drizzle learning how to tune dipole antennas using a variety of methods. By all accounts, no one left early and everyone left edified.
The usual Stay After School DMR sessions found radios being programmed and new member HTs being programmed as well with a few lessons on “how to push the button on the side of the radio”!
Oh, and SCARS elected Michelle, W5MQC, as our President-Elect/VP for 2018, and re-elected all the usual suspects as Secretary and Treasurer.
And on a dreary, drizzly day, 64 people showed up at Firestation 7 and a whole bunch of us hung around after it was over. Now THAT is what a healthy Amateur Radio club looks like!
It is with great sadness that I must tell you that WB5Q, John, lost his wife Juli, suddenly several weeks ago while they were at their home near Eagle Nest, New Mexico.
Juli and John loved their New Mexico home and that is where she passed away while working in the yard. I can say with confidence that all of SCARS is saddened by Juli’s death.
Ham Radio Horizons
I’ve spoken during the Technician classes, and off and on to individuals, about one of my all-time favorite ham rags “Ham Radio Horizons”. Even before I became an ARRL member, I subscribed to this little mag and dog-eared so many articles that none of my issues would ever lie flat! I opined in a very pathetic manner that I’d lost all 3 years of my copies one way or another and that I’d been completely unable to find it anywhere online.
But, Gloryoski! I dredged around and found it!
This is a wonderful, easy to read AND understand publication which has MANY accessible construction projects. It also explains things in a very easy and straightforward manner since it was written with a new Amateur in mind.
You can read this in MANY formats, or even download the entire library as per-issue pdf files. You should At The Very Least go browse among these wonderful pages.
