Cycle 66 This Sunday — Menu

Cycle 66 is an urban/rural bicycling tour along historic Route 66 and beyond. Beginning and ending in downtown Edmond, Cycle 66 offers four distinct routes for all experience levels and raises funds for worthy causes in our community, including the Oklahoma Route 66 Association and Autumn Life Behavioral Health Center.

The Edmond Amateur Radio Society (EARS) is organizing 50 amateur radio operators to handle the emergency communications for the ride. Clay Mayrose WB6LBU reports that they still need about 20 hams to help with the event. This is a high-profile ride that allows our amateur radio efforts to shine. Cycle 66 is coming this fall on Sunday, November 6th, and hams will use 2-meter radios to communicate with each other to keep track of the riders in the event. This event is a great place to start your emergency communications efforts or to practice operating remotely. Clay and the rest of the team will make sure that you find someone to work with as you start the radio work.

If you are able to help, please complete the form below so we can get you on the list. You can sign up online on the EARS (K5EOK) website at

Full details of the cycling event can be found on the website.

National Weather Festival Follow-Up — Menu

Last Saturday was the National Weather Festival at the National Weather Center, in Norman, OK. Thousands of folks showed up to visit hundreds of demonstration booths. Since this was the first in-person event since 2019, it was great to see all of the folks in the weather industry get back together.

This year, SCARS played a bigger role in the event. Mark Clayton N5AZQ and his great team of hams staffed two booths at the festival. The Norman Emergency Response Team’s trailer was the home to a booth, shown above, that held a number of demo items, including Lea Greenleaf W5HLG’s go-box and a magnetic loop antenna. The second booth was in support of the National Weather Museum’s educational trailer with Ross Forsyth KD5GRN and his team.

Mark reported that they had over 500 visitors to the booth and we welcomed many local dignitaries. It was so nice to see hams from all over the state stop by and say hello. We also were able to help some folks get started in their amateur radio career.

And, this year SCARS provided the ground coordination for the three OKC news/weather choppers. Mark and the team secured the landing zone and coordinated the landing and takeoff of these three magnificent birds.

Put this event on your ‘must-do’ list for 2023!

SCARS Christmas Party Save The Date — Menu

It is hard to believe that today is the start of November. Yet again the final 60 days of a year sneak up on us. One of the last events of the year on the SCARS calendar is the annual Christmas Party. More details will follow, but hold this evening open for our annual event. Our Elmer Night for that evening will be canceled to give all of us a chance to meet together.

This annual event started in 1978 and brings about 50 hams together for a great meal and a “White Elephant” Christmas gift exchange. Each gift should be a maximum of $15, and “No Free Harbor Freight items are allowed.” Bring your wrapped gift labeled as from/for either a “ham” or “non-ham.” This year’s event will be December 6, 2022, at 5:30 pm, at the Golden Corral, 123 N Interstate Dr., Norman, OK. More information is available at club meetings or on the SCARS Facebook Group.

Arc Thames, W4CPD, the Section Emergency Coordinator of ARRL’s Northern Florida Section and Emergency Coordinator of Santa Rosa County Florida, passed traffic during the storm and shares some of his experiences.
